Health & Safety
The information on this page outlines both the rules and expectations you are required to abide by as a RustConf attendee as well as health and safety resources to lean on if needed during the event. We know that everyone has a slightly different set of measures that make them feel safe (especially at an in-person gathering,) but our hope is that the policy below accommodates a large percentage of our audience in a way that remains genuinely enforceable.
As your hosts, we want to ensure that all RustConf guests are aware of our health and safety policies as early as possible so that you can make informed decisions about your RustConf experience. We hope to have the opportunity to host you!
If you have any questions or concerns about your health and safety at RustConf or in related spaces during the lead-up to our 2025 event, please contact our team at rustconf@rustfoundation.org.
Respiratory Illness Policies & Information
The RustConf 2025 COVID-19 and respiratory illness policy is based on realistic enforceability. In other words, while we want RustConf attendees to feel safe, healthy, and accommodated, we do not want to misrepresent our limited ability to ensure that every attendee complies with proper mask use guidelines throughout all areas of the venue during the entire event.
Because there is no way for us to guarantee that you will not catch a contagious illnesses while attending RustConf in person, we encourage you to prioritize your personal health, safety, and comfort when making your plans. If you are immunocompromised or if you understandably do not wish to risk catching a virus, we encourage you to attend virtually. The virtual RustConf experience will be free again this year and we plan to make it as valuable and immersive as possible!
Our mask, test, and vaccine policies below are subject to change based on Seattle’s local regulations and the state of COVID at the time of the event. We encourage you to check this resource regularly prior to visiting Washington state.
VENTILATION
The Hyatt Recency in downtown Seattle is a well-ventilated venue with wide hallways and more opportunities to distance than last year. The venue has four rooftop air handlers that serve the floor 7, where RustConf will be held. The air going to this floor is filtered and conditioned to meet the demands of each individual space, which utilize VAV units (Variable Air Valve). A networked control system automatically modulates the temperature and amount of the air. Carbon monoxide sensors are used to allow more fresh outside air in and exhaust more return air if CO2 levels reach a specific setpoint. A mixture of fresh outside air and air being returned from the spaces is provided in each of the spaces we will be using. This air is double-filtered at the air handlers by MERV 8 carbon pleat primary air filters and then secondary MERV 13 air filters. In short, the Hyatt Regency Seattle provides 30% more fresh air ventilation than the minimum standard throughout the building while meeting industry standards for thermal comfort.
MASKS
Masks are recommended, but not currently required, to attend RustConf 2025. We strongly advise you to bring your own N95 mask but we will have one available for each attendee joining us in person. We particularly encourage high-risk individuals and/or those with immunocompromised family members or colleagues to wear an N95 mask while attending RustConf, or to attend virtually. For guidelines on safe mask use, please visit this resource.
You must respect other RustConf guests who choose to wear a mask. Those who fail to do so will be asked to leave.
TESTS
While we are not currently planning to require a negative COVID test to attend, we strongly encourage all attendees to take a COVID test before traveling to the event and upon return. We also recommend that you bring a COVID self-test with you in case you feel unwell during your travels. Please remain at home/do not enter the event if you test positive for COVID or begin displaying symptoms.
VACCINES
While we strongly encourage all RustConf attendees to be up-to-date on their influenza shots, COVID vaccinations/boosters, and other preventative vaccines to reduce the spread of illness, we will not require proof of vaccination upon entry.
Food Allergies
If you are attending RustConf 2025 in person and have a food allergy we need to be aware of, please disclose your requirements during registration. We will accommodate allergies and intolerances reported to us prior to August 26th due to our catering deadlines.
Accessibility
We selected our 2025 venue in large part due to its accessibility. The Hyatt Regency in Downtown Seattle is fully accessible by scooter and wheelchair via ramps, escalators, and elevators. Wheelchair and scooter accessible restrooms will be available onsite, as will gender-neutral restrooms. We also plan to feature a quiet room for those with sensory difficulties or attendees seeking a darker and less noisy place to reset.
